Police arrest suspected member of kidnap, robbery syndicate in Anambra

The Police Command in Anambra has arrested a suspected member of kidnap, robbery and car snatching syndicate in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Awka.

Ikenga said that the suspect, male, 43 is alleged to be a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu arrested another criminal gang member, male, 43 at Okpoko, Ogbaru local government in the early hours of Wednesday.

“During the operation, the operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, 88 rounds of ammunition, two face masks, and two hand gloves,” he said.

He explained that the feat was achieved following the confession of one of the gang members who has been in police custody.

The police spokesman said that he told the police how they handed over their firearms to the first suspect for safekeeping after each kidnapping operation.

He said that the first suspect admitted receiving returns from the proceeds of ransom collected from kidnapped victims.

Ikenga said  the suspect is   assisting the police with useful information aimed at arresting other fleeing members of the gang and possibly recovering additional operational weapons. (NAN)
