As part of its commitment to quality and effective healthcare service delivery, and in preparation for the January, 2026 Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccine rollout, the Edo State Government through the Office of the First Lady has unveiled the Technical Working Group (TWG), tasked with creating awareness and promoting the upcoming MR Vaccine rollout.

During the inauguration at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Anani, emphasized the importance of public understanding, acceptance, and uptake of the Vaccine. She encouraged the Team to ensure a widespread sensitization and mobilization on its importance.

According to her, “The MR Vaccine offers dual protection against measles and rubella; safeguarding children and mothers from serious complications. Rubella can have devastating effects on pregnant women and their unborn babies, causing congenital defects. The Vaccine protects future generations and promotes a healthier start in life.”

“Today, we take a decisive step forward. The introduction of the Measle-Rubella vaccine in our routine immunization schedule marks a significant advancement in our public health strategy. This vaccine is not just a replacement, but an upgrade, offering dual protection against measles and rubella; two diseases that have long threatened the lives and futures of our children. While measles is well known for its high transmission and potential complications, rubella is often overlooked. Yes, its impacts, particularly on pregnant women and their unborn babies, can be very devastating.”

“Congenital rubella syndrome may result as various defects, including deafness, heart abnormalities and developmental challenges. By adopting the MR Vaccine, we are not only protecting our children, we are safeguarding mothers and securing a healthier beginning for our generations to come.”

Mrs. Anani reiterated Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Edo State, particularly for vulnerable populations. In her words, “The Edo State Government, under the visionary leadership of Distinguished Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has placed child and maternal health at the heart of its development agenda. We are investing in stronger health systems, expanding access to care, and improving the indices that reflect the true well-being of our people.

“Today, as the First Lady of this State, my office remains deeply committed to this cause. We will continue to champion initiatives that promote maternal health, strengthening routine immunization and ensure that no child in this State is left behind. The inauguration of this technical working group is a testament to this commitment, bringing together experts, partners, and advocates to guide a successful rollout of the MR Vaccine across our State.”

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole added that the vaccine requires proper sensitization due to potential misconceptions and conspiracy theories. He added that the Technical Working Group was initiated to educate the public on the Vaccine’s importance, address identified concerns and misinformation.

According to him, the goal is to prevent another outbreak, particularly with the State currently battling diseases like diphtheria, dengue fever, Lassa fever, and yellow fever. He stated that the Vaccine rollout is planned for January, 2025, with preparations underway to ensure that healthcare facilities are equipped and healthcare workers are adequately trained.

The highpoint of the meeting was the official inauguration of the TWG by Mrs. Anani, who administered the Oath and the members pledged to serve with diligence, dedication, effectiveness, and efficiency in the exercise.
