The Edo State Special Security Squad, Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, has revealed plans to expand its operations to other parts of the State in renewed efforts to combat insecurity.
This was disclosed by an Executive Member of the Squad, Comrade Amiolemen Noah Idemudia, while briefing newsmen in Benin City, Edo State capital.
Comrade Idemudia emphasized the Squad’s progress in curbing criminal activities across the State. He reported a significant reduction in cultism and kidnapping, particularly in Benin City and its environs, since the Squad’s inception.
He also noted a noticeable decrease in cult-related violence and killings, stating, “I believe Edo people must have been seeing that there are changes in this whole situation. There has been a bit of silence regarding killings as it use to be in the past.”
He attributed the Squad’s successes to the support of the Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday, Okpebholo who established the unit, and the cooperation of Edo citizens.
He said: “We also thank Edo citizens. Sincerely, without their assistance too, we will not be able to get to where we are at the moment. They have really helped which shows that every citizen of Edo State were all tired of the situation.”
He urged the public to continue their vigilance and report crimes, stating, “Together, we would succeed in this battle.”
Looking ahead, Idemudia announced the Squad’s intention to expand its operations to Edo Central and Edo North, with plans already mapped out. He also clarified the Squad’s mandate, asserting that it is “not for political gains or other things like people are trying to insinuate.”
He stressed that the Squad was solely set up by the Governor to combat insecurity. Idemudia issued a stern warning to those involved in cult activities and kidnapping, advising them that Edo State is no longer safe for their activities.
He encouraged cultists who are tired of their lifestyle to “come out peacefully and renounce,” assuring them they would not face embarrassment.
Idemudia also clarified the Squad’s operational boundaries, emphasizing that they are not authorized to engage in financial activities or independent investigations.
The role of the Squad is to support the Police in crime reduction. Once an apprehension is made, suspects are immediately handed over to the Police for further investigation.
He cited a recent incident where an accusation of financial misconduct against Squad members was retracted and an apology issued, confirming that the individuals involved were not part of the Squad.
Monday’s activities of the Squad included a profiling exercise for its members across all three senatorial districts – Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, respectively.
