The Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has called for the continued supports of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in upholding societal order and security, by their significant contributions to the wellbeing of their spouses through fostering of peace of mind at homes, which culminates in their effectiveness and efficiency at duty.

Mrs. Anani made the call during an engagement with representatives of POWA at the Government House in Benin City, where she emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Police and communities, in building a more resilient and supportive society.

According to her, “I have always said that Police officers are very important to us because they are saddled with the responsibility of taking care of society and bringing sanity. As wives of Police officers, you play an important role in supporting your husbands. If you don’t give them peace at home, they won’t be able to give us peace on the road or carry out their duties effectively. The Police are our friends, and we want them to be even more friendly.”

Reaffirming her Office’s commitment to initiatives that combat gender-based violence (GBV), empower women and youths, amongst others, Mrs. Anani highlighted the significance of women’s empowerment and youth development programmes in fostering a healthier society. She expressed appreciation for initiatives which support women and youths with the pledge of her Office’s support for such endeavours.

Mrs. Anani added, “In our office, we encounter cases of GBV against women and children, including rape and violation. Cultural practices also lead to women being deprived of their rights and properties. Moreover, we see disturbing trends of youths engaging in violent relationships. To build a healthy society, it is essential to empower our youths, recognizing their potentials as future leaders. If we don’t address these issues, it will be challenging for us to coexist peacefully.”

She emphasized the importance of supporting the families of Police officers, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty or lost their lives due to natural causes. This support, she noted, is essential in honouring the sacrifices of these dedicated individuals who have served the Nation.

The Chairperson of POWA and wife of the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Helen Agbonika, commended Mrs. Anani for her work in education, health, empowerment and sought her Office’s support for their non-governmental organisation, which focuses on empowerment. She disclosed that during the last celebration of the International Youth Day, the Association mentored and empowered youths as part of efforts aimed at addressing the issue of youth involvement in crimes.
