The Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has asserted that the Edo State Government, under the leadership of Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has partnered with stakeholders to offer free vaccines against diphtheria in the State.

Mrs. Anani made the assertion while addressing guests and staff at the Government House in Benin City. She solicited for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of diphtheria, stressing the severity of the disease outbreak on the State. She recommended early detection and treatment as key measures of effectively managing the disease and encouraged individuals displaying symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

According to Mrs. Anani, “Diphtheria is a deadly disease. Those having symptoms should seek medical attention promptly. By following public health guidelines and reporting suspected cases, we can all play a part in containing this outbreak; by staying up-to-date on vaccinations, families can significantly reduce the risk of diphtheria and other vaccine-preventable diseases. This proactive approach is essential in protecting not only individuals but also the broader community from the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases.

“The Diphtheria vaccine helps to prevent the infection, reduce severity of symptoms and prevent transmission. Regular check-up and timely vaccinations are essential. Vaccination is key to shielding ourselves, children and communities from this potentially deadly disease. Let us prioritize vaccination, especially for our children, it is very important.”

Mrs. Anani highlighted the significance of collaboration between government agencies, healthcare workers, and communities in effectively combating the diphtheria outbreak. She emphasized that a collective effort is crucial in preventing the spread of the disease, promoting public awareness, and ensuring timely treatment for affected people. “I encourage everyone to visit the closest designated centre and get vaccinated for free. Let us intensify vaccination efforts, spread awareness, and quickly identify and report suspected cases,” she concluded.

Highpoint of the engagement was the administration of the Diphtheria vaccine on Mrs. Anani, members of staff within the Government House, amongst others.
