The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has called for increased sensitization on the factors contributing to the rising incidence of sickle cell in society. This appeal was made during a commemorative event for the 2025 World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, themed “Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy,” which held at the former Sickle Cell Centre, Reservation Road, Benin City.

There should be more awareness about this challenge so that people know their genotype before marriage. It is not a disease or condition you can contract from anyone, but rather something inherited from parents.”
