The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has advocated for strengthening the laws that protect women and children in the Society. This advocacy was made, when she received the Federation of women Lawyers, at the Office of the First Lady, Government house Benin City.
Mrs. Anani, appreciated their visit and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenges facing women and children in the State. She assured FIDA of her commitment to supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.
‘We need to review many of our laws as some are ineffective. Justice delayed is justice denied. For instance, the case of the Okpella girl who was raped on December 24, 2024, is still pending. Such cases should be expedited’
Speaking at the meeting, the FIDA Edo State Chairperson, Mrs.Francisca Elema, who led the delegation expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her dedication to the welfare of Edo State’s citizens. She also mentioned that as outlined in Section 27 of the FIDA Constitution, the Chief Judge, the Wife of the Governor, and the Attorney General hold honorary positions as Patrons and Matrons of FIDA.
Mrs. Elema reiterated FIDA’s commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children through legal frameworks.
However she mentioned FIDA faces some challenges which include unfinished infrastructure, non-functional vehicles, and funding constraints. Mrs. Elema appealed to Her Excellency for support in addressing these challenges.
Furthermore, Mrs. Anani emphasized that Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo is deeply committed to protecting women and children, and will take all necessary steps to ensure their rights are safeguarded.
Similarly, Mrs. Anani also welcomed a delegation from the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWA), led by Hajiya Audu Usenat Esohe. The group sought to collaborate on efforts to combat gender-based violence and empower women.
Mrs. Anani expressed her full support, emphasizing the importance of unity, solidarity, and promoting peace in all aspects of life.
