We, leaders of Initiative for Democratic Advancement and Free Speech, express our deep concern regarding the ongoing media trial of the Tribunal proceedings, currently holding in Benin City, Edo State capital, wherein one Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is challenging the outcome of the 21 September 2024 governorship polls.
We acknowledge the importance of public awareness and the role of the media in disseminating information. However, we believe that biased media coverage and commentary on this case may cause serious harm
Biased media coverage can create strong opinions among the public, potentially influencing the judges and making it difficult to get an impartial judgment.
Biased media coverage can unduly influence witnesses, judges, and even the defendants, potentially compromising the integrity of the legal proceedings.
The defendants, like all individuals, have the right to a fair hearing. Biased media coverage can create a perception of guilt before the legal process is concluded.
We urge all friends in the media to exercise restraint in their coverage of this case. We encourage responsible reporting that focuses on factual information while respecting the rights of the defendants and the integrity of the judicial process.
We believe that a fair and just outcome can only be achieved through a fair and impartial legal process, free from undue media influence.
